Who is Perky Pete, or Peter Perke... ?

The posthumous career of Peter Perke begins wrapped in chip paper soaked with salt and vinegar, and rain swept in from the crashing waves of some torrid coastal water which opens out to reveal a blinding light in the grey, like a glitter ball revolving, capturing and projecting every ray, sending them dancing playfully over everything in range, breathing life into wearyness and charm into the tarnished. Peter Perke's scorching assent begins shrouded in mystery in the murky dorm's of a northern boys home. Those were years Peter prefers to forget.

Never revealing the darkness of those years Peter will not even disclose his original given name. At the age of 14 Peter secured a position as a Redcoat and put those days behind him. Taking on a new name he vowed to bring sunshine into the lives of the dull and the dreary. This first reincarnation found Peter in the position as first grip to the camp comedian JessB.Quiet and he took on the name of Phil Frisky. The young Phil Frisky learned quickly quickly from his mentor and Pete has often paid tribute to B. Quiet who tragically and mysteriously died just as the young Frisky, soon to become Perky, was truly beginning to find his feet. Jee B. Quiet influence can clearly be recognised if we look at B. Quiets most popular catchphrase "No, no, I'll 'ave one later" which it can be said was the inspiration which fired Perkys own catchphrases "No, you've got to 'ave one. Perky has often publicly lamented for his lack of speed in reaching the power switch, as B. Quiet became entangled in the Bingo wheel of fortune and was literally spun to death. (The incident effected Perky so badly that for a while he couldn't use a washing machine or walk past a launderette.)

For the now newly named Peter Perke, fortunes wheel was to spin him onto a different fate as a scheduled visit to the camp from a top talent scout was to set Perky on the road to goal. After a brief partnership with another well respected comedian, Jack Spanker, touring the clubs as a double act. Perky was finally forced to go it alone after Spanker became confined to a wheelchair, completely paralysed after falling down the stairs at the B.B.C.'s headquarters where he and Perky were in negotiations for the spot as co-hosts of one of the fist t.v. Saturday night variety shows called 'The Saturday Night Variety Show'. Initially the show was a great if brief success, and Perky finally had the opportunity to display the full range of his talents. Entertaining not only with his easy wit, but also unleashing his marvellous vocal talents on an unsuspecting audience. The show also provided Perky with the perfect opportunity to try out an idea he had fermenting from his camp days. The idea was called 'Tickerty Boo', it was at once a stroke of genious but was , however, to be the cause of his fall from grace. The game consisted of in essence or head to head high speed bingo with the added element of distraction from a kaleidascope of visual and aural spectacles supplied by the likes of explosions and pyrotechnics, tickling clowns, chainsaw jugglers, the massed ranks of the Queens guards and so on. The show was cut short and sensationally axed after an unfortunate accident involving a stunt motorcycle display team and a contestant who stood up shouting 'BINGO' at the wrong time.
